Oncology Services

Offering diagnostic, treatment and support services close to home.

The Regional Cancer Center, offering services at Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC) and Indian Path Medical Center (IPMC), provides the latest in technology and treatment.

The services offered by The Regional Cancer Center include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation therapy
  • Oncology surgery

The Center stays up to date on the latest technology, including:

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), a very sophisticated way of delivering radiation therapy. IMRT adds the ability to rapidly test and evaluate hundreds, even thousands of proposed options for therapy design before arriving at the best option for a particular patient.

Mammosite radiation therapy, which lowers the number of radiation treatments from nearly 40 to just 10 by working from inside the breast.
The technique uses a balloon catheter that is placed at the site of the lumpectomy. The catheter is hooked up to a machine that injects a radioactive item through the catheter and into the balloon.

Mountain States also offers support services for cancer patients that include:

Pastoral Care Services. When someone becomes a patient, a hospital chaplain automatically becomes a member of his or her multidisciplinary team. He or she or a member of the Pastoral Care staff - which includes two other chaplains and more than 30 volunteers - can be available upon request.

Oncology Support Groups. The Regional Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society sponsor two different monthly support groups: a general meeting for cancer patients and their families, and another for women experiencing breast cancer.

Hospice Bereavement Groups. Eighty-five percent of the patients served by Hospice are cancer patients. If someone loses a loved one to cancer, the bereavement support groups sponsored by Hospice may be of comfort.

Cancer Prevention and Community Outreach. At The Regional Cancer Center, we have programs in place to let people know about the types of cancer screenings available and other important information that can help them reduce the odds of getting cancer. We conduct several educational programs each year for the public, each one focusing on a different type of cancer. We also participate in health fairs across the region, regularly offer cancer screenings, and distribute information about cancer prevention and early detection through The Health Resources Center.

The Regional Cancer Center maintains affiliations with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Duke University and Vanderbilt Medical School. First certified and accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer in 1951, The Regional Cancer Center has been awarded four-year accreditation, a shining testament of its experience, expertise and loving care.
