Certified Nursing Assistant Training Program

Learn the basics of bedside patient care in the classroom and hospital settings.

Course Description

The Certified Nursing Assistant Program will present the basics of bedside patient care under the guidelines of the federal and state requirements. Participants who successfully complete the course will meet criteria to sit for the state certification examination. The course includes 60 hours of classroom participation and 40 hours of clinical experience.

How Do I Apply?

You may apply in person for the course by completing the application process at any of the Mountain States Human Resources Departments. You will then be called to set up an interview to discuss enrollment in the class.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate effective infection control practices.
  • Administer and safely meet basic personal care needs of patients.
  • Demonstrate competency in assisting in elimination activities while providing for privacy and maintaining dignity.
  • Discuss role of CNA in skin care with focus on prevention of complications.
  • Competently perform vital signs and distinguish normal and abnormal results.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of pain management.
  • Utilize proper body mechanics to promote safety and prevent injury.
  • Properly demonstrate use of assistive, orthotic and prosthetic devices.
  • Document in clinical record.
  • Discuss functions associated with body systems in regard to disease management and the aging process.
  • Identify importance of nutrition, demonstrate feeding techniques and incorporate strategies for promoting good dietary health.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the dying process in caring for the terminal patient.
  • Discuss care of the pre- and post-operative patient.
  • Demonstrate role in the admission and discharge process.
  • Communicate effectively with staff, patient and family
  • Discuss patient rights and individualize care based on cultural, physical and psychological traits.
  • Promote quality of life.
  • Obtain BLS certification with American Heart Association.
  • Define role of interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrate understanding of medical terms and abbreviations.
  • Verbalize knowledge of emergency codes and define CNA's response to each.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Discuss safe alternatives to restraints.
  • Recognize signs of abuse and understand reporting methods.
  • Demonstrate loving care and Patient-Centered Care approaches.
